What are the special elements of a Taoist wake and funeral?

Taoist funeral services vary depending on the dialect group the decedent belongs to—Hokkien, Teochew, Cantonese, Hakka, Hainan, etc. However, certain elements will remain in a Singapore Taoist Funeral Service, regardless of dialect.

For one, food and fruit offerings to the deceased, such as candles, lamps, tea, rice and water. Paper products are to be burnt so as to provide the decedent with such items in the afterlife. These paper products are those of money, houses, mountains, maids, electronic products and modes of transportation—items which are necessary in this life, and hence also necessary in the afterlife.

If the decedent is thought of to have lived a long life with many offspring, special clothes called 寿衣 will be donned by the decedent. The attire has seven layers, and is made of high quality materials so as to ensure that the deceased will stay warm in the afterlife.

Additional grand elements are also commonly seen in a Taoist funeral service such as a live band, traditional music band, big-headed dolls, and the traditional metal hearse.

What is the Taoist belief regarding death?

Depending on the dialect of the deceased, Taoist beliefs regarding the afterlife are varied. However, it is a shared belief amongst all that the rituals carried out on earth upon death, are done to ensure the deceased's has a smooth sailing afterlife.

For instance, a pearl is placed in the deceased's mouth, or in certain dialects, a bag of rice is placed on top of the coffin. The pearl and/or bag of rice serves to ensure protection of the body of the deceased in Hell.

Paper products that are burnt are also done with the purpose of ensure the good of the decedent's afterlife. Money is burnt to bribe court officials in Hell, so that the decedent is able to go past the levels of hell safely, away from the "hungry souls" and "evil spirits". Paper items like houses, cars, maids are burnt so that the decedent is able to have such provisions in the afterlife as well.
